Can a $5 fountain pen actually be worth using? I wondered the same thing before I tried the Platinum Preppy. Turns out, yes. For less than a fancy coffee, the Preppy delivers a writing experience that holds up against pens costing ten or twenty times as much. It's the pen I recommend to anyone getting into fountain pens, and even I keep a few around.

Nib Size Comparison

The Extra Fine (EF) nib writes a thin line, roughly 0.2 mm. I found it perfect for writing in Hobonichi grids, margin notes, and any situation where the paper quality is iffy. It has some feedback. Some people call it pencil-like.

The Fine (F) nib writes around 0.3–0.4 mm. It's smoother than the EF with a little more ink flow. For me, this is the sweet spot. It's fine enough for detailed work but smooth enough for comfortable writing.

The Medium (M) nib writes around 0.5 mm. It's noticeably smoother and wetter than the F. But it may bleed or feather on cheap paper. I'd stick with quality notebooks like Midori MD or Hobonichi's Tomoe River paper for this one.
