Zebra Pen Guide: Sarasa Gel Pens, Mildliner Highlighters & More

Zebra Pen Company (founded 1897 in Tokyo) is one of Japan's oldest and most reliable pen manufacturers. I'll say this: Zebra might not have the luxury cachet of Sailor or the technological wizardry of Uni, but they've created two products that have become genuine cultural phenomena: the Sarasa Clip gel pen and the Mildliner highlighter.
If you've scrolled through studygram, bullet journal hashtags, or stationery TikTok the way I have, you've definitely seen these products. The Mildliner uses muted, "mild" colors that are easy on the eyes. It has become the defining highlighter of the 2020s, in my opinion. The Sarasa Clip, with its patented clip design and enormous color range, is one of the best-selling gel pens in the world. Zebra also makes the DelGuard mechanical pencil, which never breaks leads. I find that pretty impressive.
Sarasa Clip: The Gel Pen That Took Over the World
Zebra Sarasa Clip Gel Pen (Standard)
Zebra Sarasa Clip: The Best Clip in Stationery
The Sarasa Clip is named after its signature feature: a large, spring-loaded metal clip that's strong enough to clip onto thick notebooks, planners, or binders without breaking. The clip is genuinely useful. You'll find yourself clipping your Sarasa to everything.
But the clip is only the beginning. The Sarasa uses Zebra's water-based pigment gel ink. It's smooth, dark, and quick-drying. Most people go for the 0.5mm and 0.7mm tips, but you can also get it in 0.3mm (ultra-fine) and 1.0mm (bold). The ink is water-resistant and archival-quality. The pen body comes in over 30 solid colors, plus special editions. I personally own about eight of them.
Best for: Everyday writing, planners, note-taking, and anyone who clips their pen to a notebook.

Sarasa Clip Vintage: Muted, Retro-Inspired Colors
The Vintage series is a special edition of the Sarasa Clip with muted, retro-inspired colors that I absolutely love: Vintage Sepia, Vintage Burgundy, Vintage Dark Red, Vintage Antique Pink, Vintage Coral Pink, Vintage Green, Vintage Aqua, Vintage Blue Gray, and Vintage Purple. These colors are significantly more subdued than the standard Sarasa palette. They've become hugely popular in the bullet journaling community, and I can see why.
The Vintage series uses the same excellent gel ink as the standard Sarasa. The only difference is the color. And what colors they are. The Vintage Sepia is the best brown gel pen on the market, in my humble opinion.

Zebra Sarasa Grand: Premium Metal Body
The Sarasa Grand takes the Sarasa Clip refill and puts it in a metal body. It's brass with a matte enamel finish available in five colors: Navy, Black, Red, Gray, and White. I love the satisfying heft and the knurled grip section. The Grand uses standard Sarasa Clip refills, so you can swap colors easily. It's the perfect affordable luxury gel pen if you ask me.

Zebra Sarasa Nano: 0.3mm Ultra-Fine
The Sarasa Nano is designed for the smallest handwriting possible. It uses a 0.3mm needle-point tip that produces an incredibly fine line. The pigment ink flows smoothly at this tiny size. No skipping, no inconsistency. The Nano is a favorite among bullet journalists who work in small grid spaces and anyone who writes in tiny, precise script. I use mine for annotations.

Zebra Mildliner: Dual Tip Highlighter (Standard Set)
Zebra Mildliner: The "Mild" Highlighter Sensation
The Mildliner is the product that made Zebra famous on social media, and I totally get why. Unlike traditional neon highlighters that scream for attention, the Mildliner uses muted, "mild" pastel colors. They're easy on the eyes and look great on the page. Each marker has two tips: a broad chisel tip for highlighting text and a fine bullet tip for underlining, dotting, or writing.
The standard system includes 25 colors organized into five sets of five: Fluorescent, Pastel, Warm, Cool, and Mild. The Pastel set is the most popular for bullet journaling. The Mild set includes the desaturated, almost-gray shades that have become the brand's signature.
The Mildliner ink is translucent and water-based, so it won't bleed through most paper. It dries quickly and doesn't smudge most pen inks. I think it's the perfect companion to the Sarasa Clip. Those two products feel like they were designed for each other.
Best for: Bullet journaling, study notes, planners, and anyone who wants their highlighting to look aesthetic rather than aggressive.

Mildliner Sets: The Best Way to Build Your Collection
The Mildliner is typically sold in themed 5-packs: Warm (pink, orange, yellow tones), Cool (blue, green, purple tones), Pastel (baby pinks, mint, lavender), Fluorescent (subdued brights), and Mild (desaturated, muted earth tones). The 15-color set combines three of these packs, and the 25-color box set includes all five. The box set is the ultimate collection and makes a fantastic gift.

Zebra DelGuard Mechanical Pencil
Zebra DelGuard: The Lead That Never Breaks
I think the DelGuard is an engineering marvel. It solves the oldest problem with mechanical pencils: broken lead. Zebra's patented DelGuard mechanism has two spring-loaded components: one at the tip that absorbs downward pressure, and one in the sleeve that absorbs side pressure. When you press too hard, the mechanism compresses instead of snapping the lead.
You can press as hard as you want, and the lead won't break. I've tested this myself. The DelGuard is available in 0.3mm (the most impressive: 0.3mm lead that never breaks is genuinely miraculous), 0.5mm, and 0.7mm. The grip section is textured rubber for comfort. For heavy-handed writers like me, this pencil is a game-changer.
Best for: Students, heavy-handed writers, and anyone who's ever snapped a mechanical pencil lead in frustration.
